Real Pork Trust Consortium science communication student and researcher Anu Karki earned the distinguished paper award at the annual conference for the North Central Region of the American Association for Agricultural Education (NC-AAAE).
During the conference, which took place October 2-4, in Tulsa Oklahoma, Anu presented her paper titled “Pork production on YouTube: Frame and sentiment analysis" to a full room of meeting attendees.
The study explored how pork production is represented on YouTube by analyzing how videos were framed and the sentiment expressed in viewer comments. The findings revealed a connection between video framing and how the audience reacted in the comments.
Anu shared insights on how the pork industry could use this information when producing videos. The findings suggested appealing to public audiences’ values and beliefs could be an effective way to share insights about pork production practices.
Anu entertained questions from interested audience members about the study, and she looks forward to incorporating this feedback as she prepares to submit the research paper for peer review and publication.
Anu, a second-year master’s student at Iowa State University, is advised by Dr. Shuyang Qu. Dr. Qu guided her in the development and execution of this research study along with coauthors Fally Masambuka-Kanchewa, Michael Retallick, Catherine Sanders, Alexa Lamm, and Kevan Lamm.
Thank you to the organizers of the NC-AAAE conference for providing a platform to share this insightful research and spark conversations about innovative ways to communicate about agricultural science with public audiences.
